The polls of the municipal elections in Serbia they closed at 8:00 in the evening and the counting of votes began. Local government elections were held in 68 cities in Serbia. In Belgrade, the elections were repeated since in the previous ones, last December, no mayor was elected, while irregularities were reported by the opposition and foreign observers.

Serious irregularities were also recorded by the opposition during today’s election process. As reported, the transfer of voters from other municipalities where elections are not held, as well as many cases of voter financing by the Serbian Progressive Party, were found in many municipalities. We had incidents in Belgrade and Novi Sad where opposition activists tried to prevent the operation of telephone centers of the ruling party.

According to the polling company IPSOS, one hour before the polls closed in Belgrade, 42% of those registered in the electoral rolls had voted, a percentage reduced by 12 points compared to December 2023 when the turnout at the polls, at the same time, had reached 54%. The first indicative results are expected shortly before midnight.

In the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) they are preparing to celebrate. The President of the Republic, Aleksandar Vucic, arrived at the headquarters of the Party and expressed the certainty that the combination led by his party and bearing his name, will achieve a “convincing victory”.

It is noted that the largest opposition parties did not participate in today’s elections arguing that the democratic conditions for their holding are not met.
