Jury selection begins today for the trial of the US president’s son, Hunter Biden, who is facing charges at the federal level for illegal gun possession.

Hunter Biden, who spent the weekend with his father, is charged in Delaware with three felonies related to the purchase of a firearm in 2018 when, according to his memoir, he was struggling with a crack addiction.

Specifically, Hunter Biden is accused of making two false statements when filling out paperwork to purchase the gun, specifically when he claimed he was not addicted to or using illegal drugs and then illegally possessed the Colt revolver for 11 days. It is illegal to possess a gun while using illegal drugs.

The trial comes just days after Donald Trump was convicted of 34 felonies in New York. The two criminal cases are unrelated, but their proximity underscores how Justice has been at the center of the 2024 campaign.

Hunter Biden also faces a separate trial in California in September on charges he failed to pay $1.4 million in taxes. He has pleaded not guilty and argued that he is being unfairly targeted by the Justice Department after both cases were supposed to have been resolved through a deal with prosecutors last July that collapsed.

Hunter Biden arrived at the federal court in Delaware, accompanied by his wife, Melissa Cohen, and his lawyer, Abby Lowell, and also by his sister Ashley Biden.

Prosecutors hope to show that Hunter Biden was dealing with addiction problems when he bought the gun and therefore lied in the forms. They said his published memoirs will be called into evidence and may also feature content from a laptop he left at a Delaware garage that was never recovered. The content reached the Republicans in 2020 and private photos of Hunter Biden in which he is naked and using drugs were leaked to the public.
