Joe Biden on Monday called his opponent Donald Trump a “criminal” for the first time, following the conviction of a New York court on Thursday at the end of the Republican former president’s historic criminal trial.

“For the first time in American history, a former president who is a convicted felon is running for president,” the Democratic president said in Connecticut during a campaign event ahead of their Nov. 5 showdown.

“As disturbing as this is, his all-out attack on the American justice system is doing even more damage,” Mr. Biden continued, saying the campaign had entered “uncharted territory since last week.”

According to the Democratic president, Donald Trump will pose an even greater threat to American democracy if he is elected in November.

“Something broke inside him” when he was defeated in the 2020 primary, Joe Biden said. The loss “literally drives him crazy,” he said.

The US president also blasted his predecessor’s statements on Sunday, when he said his imprisonment would be a “breaking point” for his followers.

These statements ring very heavy in the country, where the wound of the bloody attack on the federal Capitol on January 6, 2021, when Republican supporters tried to block the formal ratification of Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election, has not yet healed.

“He says that if he loses, we will have a bloodbath in America. What kind of person says something like that?” the Democrat said yesterday.

Initially, the White House limited itself to judging that “no one is above the law” in the US, avoiding labeling the opposing candidate as a criminal.

Until yesterday, the Democratic campaign was engaged in balancing exercises regarding Donald Trump’s judicial adventures, avoiding attacks on them.
