Three people, including two councilors, were slightly injured, according to a spokesman for the police department in Karlsruhe.
Two city councilors from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party were attacked by masked men outside a cafe in the center of Karlsruhe in southwestern Germany on Saturday.
Three people, including the two city councillors, were slightly injured, according to a representative of the police department in Karlsruhe who spoke to the German News Agency (dpa). The three injured were given first aid at the scene of the attack.
The police proceeded to arrest five suspects, who were released without restrictive conditions after verification of their information.
The AfD announced that city councilors were attacked with a baseball bat.
Police said a cane was found at the scene. A police spokesman could not confirm or deny whether a baseball bat was also used.
According to the AfD update, around 10 far-leftists participated in the attack. “Thanks to the courageous intervention of security personnel, who were sitting at a nearby table, the worst was avoided,” he underlines.
