A woman from Texas is accused of trying to suffocate a hairy Palestinian-American Muslim girl, and police said the incident was biased and that the suspect had made racially motivated comments.
The incident took place in May, but gained media attention today after the Council on American-Islamic Relations offered support to the victims and issued a statement identifying them based on their religion and background.
“The police station at Julius believes the crime was committed out of bias and that is part of the case as it has been submitted to the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office,” police said in a statement today. The district attorney’s office said it is reviewing the case.
According to the police report, the incident happened at a pool at an apartment complex in the Dallas-Fort Worth suburb of Euliss when the suspect got into an argument with the mother of the 3-year-old girl, who was in the pool with her 6-year-old son, and the latter asked the girl’s mother where they come from. The suspect, who was identified by the police as the 42-year-old Elizabeth Wolfeattempted to choke the 3-year-old girl and attempted to grab the 6-year-old boy, the police report states.
The mother was able to pull her daughter out of the water, police said, and medics arrived on the scene and the young children received medical attention.
The suspect was arrested and charged with attempted murder.
Human rights advocates have reported an increase in Islamophobia, prejudice against it Palestine and a rise in anti-Semitism in the US following the latest outbreak of violence and conflict in the Middle East.
President Joe Biden said today he was “deeply disturbed” by reports of the incident.
Other incidents in the United States that have occurred since the beginning of the war in Gaza Strip they include the October fatal stabbing of a 6-year-old boy in Illinois, who police said was targeted because he was of Palestinian-American descent, and the February stabbing of a Palestinian-American in Texas that police called a hate crime.
The November shooting of three students of Palestinian descent in Vermont was also treated as a suspected hate crime.
