Brazil asks for caution at the UN to avoid expansion of the war in Ukraine

Ambassador Ronaldo Costa Filho, Brazil’s permanent representative to the United Nations, said this Sunday (27) that it is up to the countries in the Security Council and the UN General Assembly to reverse the escalation in the Ukraine war.

In a speech at the Council meeting that approved an extraordinary meeting of the General Assembly to discuss new sanctions against Russia, the Brazilian representative asked for caution in future decisions to avoid aggravating the conflict.

Brazil supported the convening of the General Assembly despite, in the words of Costa Filho, “the doubts regarding its timetable and its contribution to achieving peace”.

“These doubts ultimately stem from our unyielding commitment to respect and interest in upholding the Charter and the Security Council’s own role,” he said.

According to him, it cannot be ignored that some of the measures discussed “increase the risks of a broader and more direct confrontation between NATO and Russia”.

“The supply of weapons, the use of cyberattacks and the application of selective sanctions, which can affect sectors such as fertilizers and wheat, with a strong risk of famine, carry the risk of aggravating and spreading the conflict and not of solving it”, he said. o Costa Filho in reference to possible new sanctions to be approved.

The Brazilian ambassador also said that the Council and the General Assembly must work together and urged the Russians and Ukrainians to move towards an immediate ceasefire.

Costa Filho also asked countries to facilitate the removal of all people who are in Ukraine and who want to leave the country.

“We need to engage in serious, good-faith negotiations that can allow for the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, security guarantees for Ukraine and Russia, and strategic stability in Europe,” he said.
