The UN Security Council today adopted a resolution calling on the West to convene on Monday. “Extraordinary emergency meeting” of the UN General Assembly to express its 193 members on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The decision, proposed by the United States and Albania, was adopted by 11 countries. Russia voted against it and the United Arab Emirates, China and India abstained. It was not possible veto for this convening, in accordance with the current UN regulation.
New, tougher sanctions against Russia were announced on Sunday by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell. Among other things, the President of the Commission announced the closure of EU airspace for Russia and the block on the Swift interbank payment system for Russian banks.
