At least 14 dead and six injured is the latest toll from the collapse of an apartment building in Assiut province, in the southern part of Egypt, which was made public on Tuesday.

The three-story building collapsed on Monday under circumstances that are still unclear, and rescue crews searched for people trapped in the rubble for more than 24 hours.

The governor of the province, Essam Saad, visited the scene of the tragedy and asked the relevant agencies to coordinate their efforts so that the stipulated compensations are paid as soon as possible and to support the injured and the families who were left homeless.

He assured that a special committee will be set up to shed light on the causes of the collapse. “The neighboring houses were inspected in order to certify their safety,” says a related announcement from his office, in which it is pointed out that some buildings that were found to have suffered significant damage from the collapse of the three-story building were evacuated for precautionary reasons.
