Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, according to Russian news agencies, said on Wednesday that Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan cannot act as a mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Spokesman Dmitry Peskov, asked during a television interview whether Erdogan could take on such a role, replied: “No, it’s not possible,” Tass news agency reported.
The president of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan he told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that Ankara could help lay the groundwork for ending the war between Russia and Ukraine and that a just peace that would serve both sides is possible, the Turkish presidency announced.
In the one-on-one meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan, they also discussed the war in Gaza and ways to end the war in Syria.
Erdogan also invited Putin to visit Turkey.
