It’s election day today in Britain with the Labor Party seemingly heading for a landslide victory
“Keir Starmer’s party is predicted to gather 484 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons, while the Conservatives 64”, writes about the British elections Süddeutsche Zeitung. If the predictions are confirmed, “it will be by far the biggest gap between the two parties in 100 years.”
During Keir Starmer’s four years as Labor leader “the party has clearly shifted to the political centre. The irony is that both the Conservative Right and far-Left politicians both express concern about the formation of a large majority in favor of Starmer: while the Conservatives cry out for a dangerous shift to the left, those on the left in the Labor ranks fear that Starmer is a “Tory in a red tie”, i.e. a Conservative in red [στα χρώματα του Εργατικού Κόμματος] tie”.
According to the Munich newspaper, however, Starmer’s possible sweeping victory “will not be a problem for the country, quite the opposite. First, unlike in Germany, in British politics the influence of the opposition is limited anyway. […] And secondly, the UK urgently wants and needs change. With a large majority, Starmer will be able to make the necessary reforms for the country – and in the long term.”
At the same time a stable majority in favor of a centrist ruling party “would be a good sign not only for Britain, but also for Europe, which is currently in a period of political instability. With her [την πλειοψηφία] of course, great responsibilities also come. And from Friday, Keir Starmer will have to prove that he can cope with the weight of these responsibilities”, emphasizes the SZ.
