In less than an hour the polls will close and the first exit polls will be published
The polls in Britain will close in less than an hour, at 12:00 midnight Greek time and as everything shows from the polls so far, it will be a historic victory for Labor with Keir Starmer as the new Prime Minister of the country.
As soon as the polls close, the exit polls will also be published, with the first results. A clear picture of who will be the winner of the election is expected after 3 am local time.
For the exit polls voters in more than 130 polling stations were asked by Ipsos researchers at their exit today to fill in a virtual ballot paper to state how they voted.
Participation so far is satisfactory and stands at around 67%.
The electoral system in the United Kingdom is purely one-party, that is, whichever candidate gets the most votes tonight in each of the 650 constituencies becomes an MP. In order to achieve self-reliance a party must collect 326 seats.
In the event that self-reliance does not occur, the first party in parliamentary power may seek scope for cooperation with smaller parties to form a government coalition (such as that of David Cameron in 2010 with the Liberal Democrats) or decide to form a minority government with the support of smaller parties parties either permanently or on critical bills (such as Theresa May’s in 2017 with the DUP).
It is noted that today’s elections are taking place with significant border changes in 584 of the 650 electoral districts across the country. The change has been made so that there is a more equal distribution of population, ie about 72,000 voters per district.
