This result came in a few minutes after admitting defeat by the outgoing prime minister Rishi Sunak.
Immediately after the next prime minister sir Keir Starmer he addressed a crowd of Labor friends saying “we’ve done it!”, adding that “now the change begins”, with his party putting itself at the service of the British people.
He said Britons were waking up with a sense of relief to have a weight lifted from their shoulders and the chance to “reclaim their future” after 14 years of Conservative rule.
He added that with victory comes a great responsibility for a “national renewal” and for providing opportunities and restoring respect to citizens who play by the rules.
“We need to put politics back in the service of the public, to show that politics can be a force for good,” he continued, pointing out that a struggle to restore trust that will define our time is beginning, with the good of the country above the good of the party.
“I will govern for every single person in this country,” Mr Starmer assured, saying the election was hard-fought by a changed Labor Party and that this change of party delivered the victory.
He concluded by saying that it will take hard work, patience and determination for the desired national renewal.
