US President Joe Biden called new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his parliamentary election victory and taking office, saying he wanted to strengthen the two countries’ “special relationship”.

“I look forward to our work together for freedom and democracy in the world and to strengthen the special relationship between our two countries,” Biden wrote in a post on the X platform.

According to the White House, the two leaders discussed their cooperation on the issue of Ukraine but also referred to the protection of the Good Friday Agreements to settle the issue of Northern Ireland. The US president is looking forward to welcoming Starmer to Washington next week for the NATO summit, he added.

Anxiety about Orban’s visit to Moscow

White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre said at the same briefing that Washington was “concerned” by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s decision to visit Moscow. This trip “will not promote peace and is counterproductive in terms of supporting Ukraine’s national sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence,” the spokeswoman noted.
