THE Hungarian government canceled earlier this evening the appointment scheduled for Monday with the German foreign minister Analena Burbok in Budapest, following Berlin’s criticism of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s visit Viktor Orban in Moscow.

The Federal Foreign Office regretted the cancellation of Ms. Burbock’s appointment with Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szgiártó because, as the statement states, “a serious and frank personal conversation between the two Foreign Ministers would be important, also because of surprise and without prior consent of Mr. Orban’s trip to Russia.”

Viktor Orban, whose country took over the rotating presidency of the European Council for the current six-month period on July 1, met with Vladimir Putin yesterday (Friday), prompting a reaction from both the EU and NATO.

Chancellor Olaf Solz emphasized that the Hungarian prime minister met with the Russian president in the framework of the countries’ bilateral relations, but he did not represent the entire EU in any way. He even noted that he had not been informed in advance about the trip to Moscow.

“The European Council will be represented by the high representative for foreign policy, Josep Borrell,” Mr Solz said, adding that “the EU’s position is very clear: we condemn the Russian military attack, we support Ukraine financially and with weapons and this organized by the EU”.
