A fire broke out late Saturday after a gas pipeline accident near the village of Vinagradnaye on the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula, spread to a nearby forest and cut off supplies to the tourist town of Alushta and more than a dozen other communities, Russian officials said.

“There is no threat to a residential area,” the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry assured via Telegram in the early hours of today.

Moscow-based officials in the Crimean peninsula reported late last night via Telegram that gas supplies had been cut to Alushta, a city of about 30,000 people, and 14 surrounding communities.

“After the gas contained in the pipelines is completely burned, restoration work will begin,” the Crimean self-government said via Telegram.

Russian news agencies reported, citing officials, that there were no injuries. The fire extends over an area of about 1,500 square meters, according to TASS.

It was not clear what kind of accident caused the fire.
