Six people were injured today in the first bull run held as part of the San Fermín Festival, which began yesterday in Pamplona, northern Spain, the regional government announced.
Five of the injured, including a 54-year-old American from New York, were injured after falling and another, a 37-year-old Spaniard, was slightly injured by a bull’s horn, according to a press release from the government of Navarre, the autonomous community in of which Pamplona is the capital.
The traditional bullfights (encierros) are the highlight of the festivities and are held every morning at 0800 local time. The San Fermín festival, during which participants dress in red and white, attracts visitors from all over the world, with American author Ernest Hemingway drawing inspiration from it in his novel The Sun Also Rises Rises”, 1926).
For eight hours, hundreds of people pour into the streets of Pamplona, covering a distance of 850 meters and running in front of 6 bulls, aiming to get as close to them as possible.
Dozens of people are injured and in some cases killed in the bullfights each year, with the last death recorded in 2009, when a young Spaniard, aged 27, was fatally injured by a bull’s horn. Since 1911, when the count began, at least 16 runners have died.
The festival started on July 6th and will end on July 14th.
