The United States is extending sanctions on Russia’s central bank

The United States is extending sanctions on Russia’s central bank in a move that would prevent Americans from engaging in any business with the country and seizing any assets it holds in the United States.

In a statement today, the US Treasury Department said the decision would apply to the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, Russia’s National Wealth Fund – run by a close ally of Vladimir Putin – and its Treasury Department.

“The unprecedented action we are taking today will significantly reduce Russia’s ability to use its assets to finance its destabilizing activities and to target the funds on which Putin and his inner circle depend to allow him to invade Ukraine. Said US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

She added: “Today, in coordination with partners and allies, we are making key commitments to limiting Russia ‘s access to these valuable resources.”
