Three more bags containing the remains of women were found in a dump in Mukuru slum, south of Nairobithe police announced tonight.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the three bags may contain the bodies of at least two women. In the first two legs were found and in the second two trunks. The third had another leg section, from the thigh to the knee.

Under the gaze of an angry crowd, police continue to search the dump where several dismembered bodies wrapped in plastic bags were found on Friday.

“We want to reassure the public that we will investigate thoroughly and cover all possibilities, including but not limited to the possibility that they are victims of a cult or serial killer,” the DCI added.

Kenya was rocked last year by the discovery of mass graves containing the remains of hundreds of members of a sect whose leader convinced believers to fast to death.

Yesterday, the police announced that the dismembered bodies of at least six women had been discovered in the Mukuro dump. The state-funded Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) said there were nine bodies, seven of which were women.

The atmosphere remains tense since Friday in the slum. According to the DCI, a team of police and medical examiners were blocked by the crowd from approaching the site.

IPOA has said since Friday it is investigating whether the police were involved in the killings.

Kenya’s security forces have come under fire after dozens of people were killed last month in anti-government protests against a tax hike announced by the government. On Friday, the head of the national police, Japhet Koume, resigned after less than two years in the post.
