Mexican drug traffickers tried to disguise themselves to look like white onions in packages totaling about 600 kilograms of methamphetamine, but now they are probably … running with tears in their eyes, as the smell of a US customs service hound did not allow the trick to be crowned with success.
A semi-trailer with a load of onions, in which the drugs were hidden, stopped for a check at a California Border Patrol and a specially trained dog let its pilot know that something was wrong.
Among the thousands of real onions, customs officers found in the ensuing check some 1,200 small packets of powder in white packages, which the traffickers had given in the form of these bulbs to deceive the law enforcement forces.
“Not only is this a cunning attempt to smuggle drugs into the country, which I have never seen before, but it is also something that took a long time to pack the drugs that way,” said Sidney Aki of the San Diego Customs Office in Southern California. .
The federal customs office estimates that 600 kilograms of methamphetamine would have a resale value of $ 2.9 million.
Another sign of drug traffickers’ ingenuity: US customs also announced that they had found and seized two kilograms of marijuana hidden in boxes of breakfast cereals, which had been mailed to Britain from the state of Kentucky.
