Ukraine will be able to “stand on its own two feet” militarily, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said on Fridaynoting that more than 20 other countries have pledged to maintain military and economic aid to the country even if the US withdraws support under a different president.

Blinken for for the first time he directly addressed the possibility of former President Donald Trump winning the November election and not support US commitments to Ukraine. The US, under President Joe Biden, has been Ukraine’s most important supporter.

Trump’s public comments have varied between criticizing US defense support for Ukraine, while his running mate, Sen. Jay de Vance, has led Republican efforts to block US military and economic aid to Ukraine.

Blinken said Friday that any new administration should take into account strong bipartisan support in Congress for aid to Ukraine.
