“How can the powerful of the earth not see the destruction and looting of the wonderful Cypriot cultural heritage”, he says, among other things, in his message for the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus
Sacred commemoration in favor of rest of the deceased Cypriots was performed today at the Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos in Point 0 of New York by the archbishop of America Elpidophoros.
As he emphasized, in his post on social media, “we gathered today, on the deeply painful anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, to tell ourselves and the whole world that we will never forget and that Cyprus will be whole again.”

Similar memorial services were held this morning by the priests of all the Greek communities in America following the suggestion of Archbishop Elpidophoros, who in his circular for the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, emphasized that “our brothers deserve our prayers, as well as Megalonisos deserves a peaceful and just solution now, as 50 years is too long and anything less is unworthy of those lost forever.”
The archbishop of America points out that “the 50th anniversary of the unjust Turkish invasion of Megalonisos is a sad milestone of a fifty-year journey, filled with sadness, injustices and misguided diplomatic actions by the powerful of the land. Political and strategic mistakes, failures and intransigence have created a situation that for many is considered a fait accompli. We, for half a century, have been praying and working tirelessly for the reunification of Cyprus and for justice, so that all our Cypriot brothers can live in peace and without invaders. In the intervening decades, major powers have ignored the suffering from the drawing of the Green Line, while the families of the missing are still asking for the remains of their lost loved ones.”
“How can the powerful of the land not see the destruction and looting of the wonderful Cypriot cultural heritage. Sacred relics and works of art are still being sold in the world art markets, while the destruction of holy temples and monuments with absolute lack of respect by the conquerors brings back to our historical memory barbaric practices that should not exist in the modern civilized world”, concludes the archbishop America.
