“The German Patriot has arrived,” he assured. “We will be able to do more on the airwaves. Of course, there is much to be done and even our protection is by no means guaranteed.”
Ukraine will see its anti-aircraft defenses boosted, having arrived from Germany third array of the American-made Patriot system, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in his speech late yesterday Sunday.
“The German Patriot has arrived,” he assured. “We will be able to do more on the airwaves. Of course, there is still a lot to be done, and our protection is by no means guaranteed, but this is in any case a win for Ukraine,” he insisted.
Mr. Zelensky has not stopped asking allies in the West in recent months more air defense systems: has talked about 6 to 25 additional Patriot arrays. It is unclear at this stage how many such systems the Ukrainian armed forces have and whether and to what extent they are all operational.
His remarks came amid reports that Moscow continues to bolster Russian troops operating in northeastern Ukraine and their slow but methodical advance into eastern regions.
The information about the reinforcement of the Russian forces mainly concerns Kharkiv. Among the elements deployed, according to Ukrainian military sources, are a strike force of Russian Pacific Fleet marines and elements of a rifle division.
The Russian army conducts wide business in Kharkiv region from the beginning of May. Its purpose is not to capture its namesake capital—Ukraine’s second largest city—but to expand a “neutral zone” between Ukrainian positions and the Russian border to stop Ukrainian artillery’s continued shelling of Russian communities.
In eastern Ukraine, Russian forces completely overran the Krasnohorivka community, 25 km west of the city of Donetsk, Russian state news agency TASS reported. According to the same source, Ukrainian military personnel were captured, while civilians were transferred from there to safer areas under the control of Russian or pro-Russian armed forces.
For its part, the Ukrainian channel “Deep State” on Telegram, which is considered to be connected to the Ukrainian army, reported that Russian forces are advancing and occupied the village of Prochres after three months of hostilities. There has been no official confirmation of the information from the Ukrainian side so far.
