The BBC reported that its workforce has been cut by almost 2,000 jobs over the past five years
The BBC, in the midst of a major restructuring plan, plans 500 more job cuts work until the end of March 2026while its workforce has fallen by 10% over the past five years, the British public broadcaster announced today.
On the occasion of the publication of its annual report, the BBC reported that its workforce had been reduced by almost 2,000 jobs the last five years.
“By the end of March 2026, we expect to see a reduction of almost 500 public sector jobs,” the BBC said in a statement.
In addition to a £500m (€594m) annual savings plan announced two years ago, the BBC is implementing an additional £200m (€237m) cost-cutting plan announced last March.
The BBC, an institution in the country for almost a century – as well as the public media and the world’s largest audiovisual and online broadcasting network – has come under fire and criticism from the Conservatives for many of their years in power, right up to the parliamentary 4th of July election and Labour’s landslide victory.
The British public broadcaster, like all traditional media, is facing the new age of social media and other platforms, which the vast majority of the younger generation are opting for. The BBC is also facing a growing challenge to its funding method.
In March, CEO Tim Davey, said the BBC was considering various options for reforming the levy, its main source of funding, after 2028.
Last year, the BBC took in £3.6bn (€4.27bn), from the remuneration fee less £80m, according to the annual report.
The fee currently stands at £169.50 (€200), following an increase since April, following a two-year fee freeze.
