The Kremlin today rejected Western media assessments that Russia was behind a series of attacks on French railways and said Western media often tried to blame Moscow for everything that happened without evidence.

Saboteurs hit France’s rail network in pre-dawn attacks across the country on Friday, wreaking havoc on rail travel and exposing security gaps hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.

France’s interior ministry said on Saturday it could not rule out foreign involvement in an attack that sabotaged signaling systems and cables on the country’s high-speed rail network, and some Western media blamed Russia while others hinted that left-wing activists are more likely to be responsible.

Asked about media speculation that Russia was behind the attacks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: “These are just the latest fakes [ψευδείς ειδήσεις] — and more unsubstantiated accusations.”

“The fact is that there are many such low-grade media outlets, even reputable ones, which did not shy away from doing everything to blame Russia for what is happening,” Peskov said.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanen said today that France suspects members of far-left organizations are behind the sabotage of the rail network.
