The military later said nine soldiers were being held for questioning for allegedly abusing a “terrorist” detainee at the detention center. The soldiers are taken in for questioning. At least ten soldiers are suspected of abusing the detainee, meaning there is a tenth suspect who has yet to be arrested, the IDF added, deeming the raid on the center over.

The far-right Minister of National Security of the Netanyahu government Itamar Ben Gvir, who went to the scene, described the intervention of the military as shameful. “The sight of constabulary officers coming to arrest our best heroes at the detention center in St. Thiman is nothing short of disgraceful. I recommend to the Minister of Defense, the Chief of the General Staff of the Israeli Army (IDF) and the military authorities to support our fighters and learn from the way the prison service works: the light treatment of terrorists is over. The soldiers must have our full support,” he said. He said members of his far-right party were heading to the detention center, located in southern Israel, to protest the arrests of IDF soldiers for allegedly abusing prisoners.

We will unite against the IDF arresting our fellow soldierssaid a soldier. “The military came to arrest us because we are responsible for the terrorists of Nuhba. Every Israeli should take to the streets to support us, I’m not ready for the shame of being arrested – I gave my life for you, for my country,” said another soldier.

Prime Minister Netanyahu’s son stressed that the state authorities’ prosecution is “criminal and anti-Zionist” referring to the incident.

Another member of Israel’s far-right government, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, denounced the arrests of Israeli soldiers. “IDF soldiers deserve respect,” he said, and not be treated as “criminals.” He also called on IDF Military Prosecutor Yifat Tomer-Jerusalem to “take his hands off our heroic warriors.”

The cabinet announced an emergency meeting in the Knesset to discuss the arrest of the soldiers. Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Chairman Yuli Edelstein has announced that he will hold an emergency hearing tomorrow on the issue. “I will not be idle in the face of scenes like the one we saw today at the base in St. Thiman,” Edelstein said.

“A situation in which masked military policemen invaded an IDF base, which is not acceptable to me and I will not allow it to happen again. Our soldiers are not criminals and this contemptuous pursuit of our soldiers is unacceptable to me,” he stressed.
