The White House indicated that efforts for a ceasefire are continuing
The White House announced today that does not consider an escalation of the conflict inevitable after the assassination of the leader of Hamas Ismail Haniya, and the United States continues to work on it reaching a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
At the daily press briefing, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said strikes attributed to Israel that killed the leader of Hamas in Tehran and a Hezbollah commander near Beirut “do not help” reduce regional tensions, and the US “they see no signs of imminent escalation.”
“The information we’ve been getting in the last 24 or 48 hours is certainly not helping to reduce the tension” in the Middle East already shaken by the war in Gaza, he added.
The spokesman also said it was too early to say whether the latest events in the Middle East could hurt the prospects of a ceasefire deal.
John Kirby said President Joe Biden has been briefed on developments in the region.
