A bomb alert has been issued at the Paris Olympics after police discovered a suspicious object near the Stade de France.

Police are waiting for a team of fireworks to arrive at the Stade de France stadium with part of the surrounding area cordoned off, reports Bild.

The nearby Saint Denis Porte de Paris train station was also closed due to the threat.

Many Olympic track and field events, including today’s, are held at the Stade de France in northern Paris.

The stadium was reportedly empty when the authorities issued the bomb warning, after the first track and field events finished at 1pm and were due to restart at 6pm. The stadium can accommodate over 80,000 people.

A massive security operation has been launched ahead of this year’s games – believed to be the biggest ever at any previous Olympic Games.

Organizers have long been preparing for the possibility of terrorist attacks or demonstrations following the recent elections in France.

Around 18,000 soldiers and 30,000 police have been deployed to secure the world sporting event in the French capital.
