They immobilized the broken leg with a cardboard box because the cast had run out
A great impression has been made in Italy by the story of a 30-year-old young man, who went to the Pati hospital, near the city Messina of Sicilywith a broken leg.
After waiting five hours for an x-ray and the diagnosis of the fractured fibula at 1:00 in the morning, the doctor announced that the necessary materials were not available to put the leg in a cast. Consequently, he chose to go with what he had at hand: he immobilized the young man’s leg by tying it inside a cardboard box.
The thirty-year-old’s father took a photo and posted it on the internet, writing as a comment:
“How can it be possible to get out of the first aid department in this condition?».
The matter, of course, immediately assumed great proportions. A public prosecutor’s investigation was launched and the regional governor of Sicily, Renato Scifani, immediately requested an explanation from the relevant local government agency.
The local opposition spoke of an “unprecedented scandal and shame”.
“Of course, I am not taking issue with the doctors, but with those who do not allow our health system to function effectively“, said the young man’s father. The 30-year-old finally turned to a private clinic in Messina, paying two hundred euros, to be able to continue his entire treatment.
