South Korean media reported that the disaster may have left 1,000 to 1,500 dead or missing, and that several rescue helicopters had crashed.
THE North Korean leader Kim Jong Un accused the South Korean media that spread “false rumour” regarding him account of the floods that hit the northern part of his country, as the official KCNA news agency reported today.
North Korea’s state media on Thursday reported flooding and torrential rain in the Sinuiju region, near the Chinese border, and published photos of Kim inspecting rescue operations from an inflatable boat.
South Korean media later reported that the disaster may have left 1,000 to 1,500 dead or missing, and that several rescue helicopters had crashed. These reports led the South Korean government to offer — in vain — its help.
According to KCNA, Kim Jong Un said that the floods caused no casualties in Sinuiju and more than 5,000 people were rescued. “The enemy’s worthless media is spreading a false rumor,” he said, according to the official agency, referring to a “vicious smear campaign.”
The South Korean government said yesterday that it had tried unsuccessfully to contact Pyongyang authorities to offer humanitarian aid.
