The woman was taken to a psychiatric clinic – The doctors say her health is gradually improving – The authorities are examining her laptop and mobile phone
Mystery continues to surround the case of a 50-year-old American woman Lalita Kayi Kumar who she was found a week ago boned and in a miserable condition in a jungle in India, specifically in the state of Maharashtra, tied to a tree.
Lalita was spotted by a shepherd who heard her screams and immediately notified the authorities who cut the chains and freed her.
In a written statement to the police, she claimed that her husband “tied her with chains and left her in the forest to die without food and water.” In fact, as she wrote in a note to the police, she said that suffers from medical problems, including “injection for extreme psychosis causing severe locked jaw and inability to drink water” and how he had 40 days to eat and drink water.
The 50-year-old woman was taken to hospital emaciated, but her physical health has since improved significantly. According to the BBC yesterday, Friday, was transferred to a psychiatric clinic for further treatment as stated by the doctors treating her.
“At this time, her health is stable,” hospital chief Dr Sanghamitra Phule told the BBC.
“He takes medicine, eats and interacts with people. If he wants something, he can communicate it. He only knows English” he added.
According to the police, Lalita was a ballet and yoga dancer in America. She then moved to India about 10 years ago to study yoga and meditation in Tamil Nadu. It was there that she met her husband – in some media, the police called him Satish – where they apparently fell out. Some reports say that Lalita stayed in a hotel in Goa for two days and then traveled to the city of Mumbai, India’s financial capital. However, there is no clarity about when and how she ended up in the forest where the shepherd spotted her.
A police investigation found a copy of her passport, which said she was a US citizen, as well as her Aadhaar card – a unique identity card for Indians – with her home address in Tamil Nadu. They also said she had a mobile phone, a tablet and 31,000 rupees ($370, £290) in her possession – allowing them to rule out theft as a motive. Police now say they are looking for evidence on her mobile phone and tablet.
THE Her husband is wanted by the authorities for attempted murder but has not yet been identified.
The US embassy in Delhi – which media reports said “has put pressure on the police to speed up the investigation” – declined to comment on the case.
