The US Department of Defense announced on Friday the deployment of additional forces to the Middle East region, where warships and fighter jets are rushing after threats from Iran and its allies Hamas and Hezbollah.
US President Joe Biden expressed hope on Saturday that Iran will finally show restraint despite threats to take revenge for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniya in Tehran a few days ago, amid fears of a generalized conflict in the Middle East.
Regional tensions have escalated dangerously since the assassination of the leader of Hamas last Wednesday in Tehran, a day after an Israeli strike in Beirut killed a senior commander of the military arm of Hezbollah, which – like Hamas – is backed by Iran.
Iran and Hamas blame Israel for Haniya’s murder and, along with Hezbollah, have vowed revenge. Israel has neither claimed nor denied responsibility.
Asked by reporters if he hoped Iran would back down, the US president replied: “I hope so. I do not know…”.

Similar measures were also taken before Iran’s April 13 missile and drone attack against Israel. But this time, in a possible combined attack by Hezbollah from Lebanon, the mission of US forces to intercept missiles and drones will be even more difficult given the pro-Iranian group’s large arsenal and proximity to Israel.
