The UN will proceed to terminate the employment contract with these persons
Nine UNRWA workers “may have been involved” in the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas in Israel, according to a UN investigation.
This internal investigation involved a total of 19 employees.
“For 9 of them there was sufficient evidence to conclude that they may have been involved in the October 7 attacks,” said the agency’s deputy spokesman, Farhan Haq.
According to the representative, the UN will proceed to terminate the employment contract with these persons.
In late January, Israeli authorities initially charged 12 UNRWA workers with involvement in the October 7 attacks. Seven more names were subsequently added to the list. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres immediately called for an investigation by the Organization’s internal audit services (BSCI).
For one of those individuals BSCI found no evidence to support the charge and in nine other cases the evidence was “insufficient”, Farhan Haq said.
The spokesman emphasized that the investigations are confidential and did not provide further details. But “we have enough information to take the measures we are taking, namely the dismissal of these nine people,” he added.
