Attack on a tanker in the Red Sea
The captain of the oil tanker Delta Blue reported today that his vessel was attacked by two small vessels 45 nautical miles south of the Yemeni port of Moha and that an anti-tank rocket exploded nearby, Britain’s maritime safety agency said earlier. (United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations / UKMTO).
Since last November, Iran-backed Houthi rebels have frequently launched attacks on merchant ships off the coast of Yemen in a show of solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip following the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas.
The Liberian-flagged tanker Delta Blue is continuing its journey and its crew is safe, the UKMTO said in a statement. The managing company of the tanker in question is Delta Tankers, based in Athens, the Reuters news agency notes, citing data from the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG).
The Houthi attacks – which have prompted the US and Britain to launch strikes in Yemen – are disrupting international trade, with many companies sending their ships on longer and more expensive voyages around southern Africa to avoid crossing the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.
