We have entered a new era, said the President of the French Republic Emanuel Macron in a speech to the French people today from Paris on the Ukrainian crisis. Macron unequivocally condemned Putin’s “violent attack” on Ukraine, noting that hundreds of people had been killed, but that the coming days would be more difficult.
We are by the side of the Ukrainian people. And next to the Ukrainian president, Macron said, noting that Zelensky is today the face of courage and freedom. The French president also stressed that he has long tried and is trying to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin that there are other ways. However, Putin chose the war, Macron said, stressing that it was a lie that Russia was under threat. He threatens, Macron stressed, saying that this war is in the spirit of revanchism. Russia today was condemned by an overwhelming majority by the UN, Macron continued, noting that “we have imposed sanctions and will continue to impose them.” He thanked the diplomats and police officers who helped French citizens leave Ukraine and the journalists who remain there.
We are not at war with Russia and the Russian people, Macron said, stressing, however, that the data to date have been overturned and will continue to change. “Democracy and freedom are no longer a given,” he said. We must get rid of Russian gas and European defense must be upgraded, Macron concluded, noting that he will have the opportunity to discuss all this with them.
