In the early hours of this Monday, there are reports of a Ukrainian invasion in the Russian region of Belgorod. Russia is also evacuating parts of Belgorod due to “activity” of Ukrainian forces near the area, the local governor announced. Belgorod Oblast is located south of Kursk.

“We have a worrying morning,” said Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov.

Earlier last week, Ukrainian forces were reported to have infiltrated Belgorod, but were repulsed.

Ukraine’s operation in the Kursk region has allowed Ukrainian forces to seize, at least temporarily, the battlefield initiative in a front-line area, and challenge Russia’s initiative across the entire theater of war, ISW said in an analysis. (Institute for the Study of War).

The Ukrainian military operation in the Kursk region and further possible Ukrainian cross-border incursions are forcing the Kremlin and the Russian military command to decide whether they perceive the kilometers-long international border with northeastern Ukraine as a frontline for Russia to defend, rather than an inactive theater of war as they have seen it since the fall of 2022.
