After a multi-pronged invasion of Ukraine last week, many analysts had expected a quick Russian victory in the conflict — after all, the war would be a clash between a relatively small army and one of the world’s biggest military powers.
Although the Russians have advanced and conquered pieces of Ukrainian territory — such as Kherson, in the south of the country — the conflict has spread to strategic areas, such as the capital, Kiev. At the same time, Ukraine receives help from Western powers and calls on civilians to act in resistance to the invaders.
Military analysts try to read Russian moves and explain why a militarily superior country failed to achieve the quick victory it hoped for against the Ukrainians. Some of them predict more brutal attacks going forward.
In this Thursday’s episode (3), Café da Manhã talks with reporter Igor Gielow about Putin’s military tactics when invading Ukraine, the difficulties the Russians face and what Russia’s next steps should be in the confrontation.
