Tens of thousands of women in West Bengal demonstrated on Wednesday night to protest the rape and murder of a young nurse at a public hospital in Kolkata last week, a crime that has sparked outrage across the country and led doctors at public hospitals to go on strike.

Responding to calls on social media, women from all walks of life marched in Kolkata and across the state of West Bengal. Smaller protests were held in several other Indian cities such as Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune.
In Calcutta, peaceful protests were marred by clashes between police and a small group of unidentified men who entered the hospital, the site of the nurse’s murder, and ransacked the emergency department.
The police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. Some police vehicles were also damaged.
Along the way, women holding placards, their faces illuminated by mobile phones, candles and torches, protested against sexual violence against them.

The body of the 31-year-old woman was found last Friday, bearing multiple injuries, at a public hospital where she worked in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal.
A post-mortem examination confirmed that the unfortunate woman was raped and murdered.
The Calcutta high court assigned the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation, an elite unit of the police, in order to “instill confidence in the public”.
In a request submitted to the court, the parents of the young woman stated that they suspect that their daughter was the victim of a gang rape.
Doctors working in public hospitals in several Indian states have suspended non-emergency care “indefinitely”, demanding justice and additional safety measures at their workplaces.
Police have arrested a man who worked at the same hospital as the victim, but the officers are accused of mishandling the case.
