New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy will name his former chief of staff, George Helmy replacement for the Democratic senator Bob Menendezwho is expected to resign from the US upper house next week, following his recent corruption conviction, the New Jersey Globe reported Wednesday.
The Democratic governor is expected to nominate Mr. Helmi for the post today and announce his choice on Friday, according to the Globe report, which did not identify its sources.
Mr Murphy’s office did not immediately respond when Reuters asked him to comment on the report.
Mr. Helmy, now a health care company executive, was Governor Murphy’s chief of staff until October and has served as an aide to Senator Cory Booker.
Bob Menendez, who has represented New Jersey in the Senate since 2006, announced in July that he would resign on August 20 after being convicted of corruption.
