The US government has approved the sale of 600 Patriot air defense systems to Germany for 4.6 billion euros. The aim is to strengthen Germany’s defense capacity. Response from Berlin
According to an announcement by the State Department, the government of United States approved the sale of 600 Patriot systems to Germany as part of strengthening the country’s defense capabilities, as announced by the German government and Defense Secretary Boris Pistorius.
The new huge equipment package is expected to cost almost 4.6 billion euros, as announced by the US Pentagon, and has already made its way to Congress. For the US, this is also a strategically important move aimed at improving the security situation of a key NATO partner, Germany, but also of its overall Europewhich, however, does not overturn the wider military balances in the region.
According to German reports, it is still unclear when Germany will receive the American Patriot systems. It is a fact, as the ZDF network observes, that these agreements usually last for several years. The contractor of the project is the American defense industry Lockheed Martin.
Sought-after state-of-the-art equipment system
The Patriot (Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target) are considered to be among the most modern mobile anti-aircraft defense systems in the world, with a long surface-to-air range. They can successfully counter enemy aircraft, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles.
According to statements by a top source about a month ago to the Reuters agency, which are relayed by German media, the goal is, in the context of its defense plans NATOthe quadrupling of German air defense capabilities to protect critical infrastructure against the backdrop of potential, future risks such as major tensions or a war.
It is worth noting that Germany has already sent three Patriot systems to Ukraine since 2022, after the Russian invasion, from the stocks of the German armed forces. Kiev, for its part, continues to ask Western allies for the Patriot because they are considered among the few systems that can successfully deter Russian airstrikes.
