The President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier estimated today that we should prepare for a “long war” in Ukrainewhere the Russian military offensive entered its second week.
From Lithuania, where he visited the German soldiers stationed in that country, German President noted that he “sees no indication” that this war will end soon.
“He will probably last a long time and we have to be patient,” he told reporters accompanying him to the Rukla military base, with his Lithuanian counterpart at his side.
Describing the war as a “violation of international law”, Steinmeier reassured the Baltic states that they feared they would be targeted by Russia if Ukraine fell. “NATO solidarity works without any reservations,” he said.
“No one in history will be able to justify what is happening now in Ukraine (…) where parents are losing their children, children are losing their parents, where people are losing everything,” he added.
THE Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, after meeting in Vilnius with his British counterpart Liz Tras, said that NATO should move “from deterrence to defense”. “That’s why we need a change of political position and some concrete means,” he said. “These means are crucial for the Baltic states, so that the attacker receives a response as soon as he decides to test NATO resilience,” he said.
THE Τρας For her part, she said the West should ensure that Putin’s plans “fail.” The three Baltic states, formerly Soviet republics, “know what is at stake after living for a long time in the shadow of Russia’s aggression,” he added.
