The US “will continue to support Israel’s right to defend itself,” a spokesman for the US National Security Council said today after Hezbollah strike in northern Israel.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had a telephone conversation with his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallad and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to Israel’s defense, the Pentagon announced today.

Austin “spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallad to discuss Israel’s defense against attacks by the Lebanese (Hezbollah),” the US Department of Defense said in an update on their phone conversation.

“Secretary Austin reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the United States to the defense of Israel against any attacks by Iran and its regional partners and allies,” the Pentagon added.

“We continue to monitor the situation closely and have been very clear that the United States stands ready to support Israel’s defense,” a Pentagon spokesman said in a statement.

The US “will continue to support Israel’s right to defend itself and to work for regional stability,” Sean Savett, spokesman for the US National Security Council, said in a statement earlier today.

At the behest of US President Joe Biden, “high-ranking American officials are in constant communication with their Israeli counterparts”, he underlined.
