Writing on Telegram, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sent his “condolences [στην] family and friends’ of the man who was killed
A British journalist working in eastern Ukraine as part of a Reuters news team was killed during a missile attack on a hotel on Saturday, the agency confirmed.
Ryan Evans was one of six Reuters emissaries staying at the Sapphire Hotel in the Ukrainian-controlled city of Kramatorsk but close to the front lines.
Ukrainian authorities said the hotel was hit by a Russian missile. Russia has not commented on the issue.
In a statement, a Reuters spokesman said, according to the BBC, that the agency was “devastated” to learn of Evans’ death.
“We are urgently seeking more information about the attack, including by working with authorities in Kramatorsk, and are supporting our colleagues and their families,” it said.
“We send our deepest condolences and thoughts to Ryan’s family and loved ones. Ryan has helped so many of our journalists cover events around the world, he will be sorely missed.”
He added that two other members of the group were being treated with serious injuries.
Ukraine’s National Police said earlier that the body of a 40-year-old British man was recovered from the rubble of a hotel at 18:35 local time (16:35 BST) on Sunday after a 19-hour search.

Zelensky: “This is everyday Russian terrorism”
Writing on Telegram, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sent his “condolences [στην] family and friends’ of the man who was killed.
“This is the daily Russian terrorism that goes on,” he said.
Today in Kramatorsk, the entire day was spent clearing the rubble after a Russian missile strike. Among the injured were journalists – a Reuters film crew, citizens of Ukraine, America, and Britain. Earlier, Reuters published footage showing parts of the hotel completely destroyed by the attack.
The Ukrainian General Prosecutor’s Office wrote in a statement that the hotel was likely hit by an Iskander-M short-range missile.
Kramatorsk is only about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the Russian-held parts of Ukraine and is regularly attacked, with civilians killed, including the famous Ukrainian writer Victoria Amelina.
The Russian military has been making slow but steady advances in the east in recent months, with Ukraine’s recent attack on Russia seen as an attempt to draw troops away from the eastern front.
