Drone entered Polish airspace during Russian bombings in Ukraine
Polish authorities reported today that a “flying object”, likely an unmanned, remote-controlled aircraft, entered its airspace in the early hours of this morning, during the Russian bombing of Ukraine.
The object may have landed on Polish territory and investigations are underway to locate it.
NATO member Poland has been on alert for such “flying objects” since an errant Ukrainian missile struck the southern village of Prevodov, killing two people, in 2022.
A military spokesman, Jacek Goriszewski, told Reuters that the trajectory of the flight and the speed of the object suggested it was not a missile.
About 100 soldiers and a helicopter are involved in the search for him.
Gorishevsky stressed that it is impossible to say whether the object was Russian or Ukrainian, since the weather conditions were not such as to allow its visual identification. For the same reason, the army could not bring it down, although it was ready.
Speaking to reporters earlier, the spokesman said the object entered Polish airspace at 07:43 (GMT) near the Ukrainian city of Chervonohrad.
It disappeared from radar at 8.00 and is likely to have left Polish airspace. There were no reports of explosions.
In December 2023, Poland reported that a Russian missile had entered its airspace.
In April of the same year, an object was found in a forest near the village of Zamots and was later found to be a Russian missile.
Romania has also announced that it has found fragments of Russian drones on its soil.
