Ukraine’s energy minister calls for “NATO to intervene” in the war

by

Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushenko today called for NATO intervention, the ninth day of Russia’s invasion, following Kiev’s allegation that Russian troops had bombed the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in central Ukraine, its largest in Europe.

“That is why we are asking for not just a professional assessment of what is happening, but a real intervention, with the toughest measures, including intervention by NATO and countries with nuclear weapons,” Halushenko said via Facebook.

He claimed that the plant had been bombed by Russian tanks and aircraft, but that his claims could not be independently substantiated.

The Ukrainian minister also said that he had a telephone conversation with the US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and asked for the imposition of a no-fly zone in Ukraine.

Washington has already rejected the request of the Kiev government.

“We are on the brink of one of the greatest technological catastrophes in human history,” Halushenko said.

Ms. Granholm confirmed via Twitter the conversation with her Ukrainian counterpart.

“I have just spoken to the Ukrainian Minister of Energy about the situation at the nuclear plant in Zaporizhia. “Russian military operations at the plant are extremely risky and must stop,” said Secretary of State Joe Biden.

He added that the plant’s reactors are protected by strong housings to prevent radioactive leakage and were closed securely.
