Tens of thousands of Tasmanians have been left without electricity today, due to powerful storms sweeping the island south of mainland Australia.

“Approximately 30,000 consumers are without power across the state,” TasNetworks, Tasmania’s state electricity distribution company, said this morning.

The National Weather Service said the cold front was moving away from Tasmania, but a second one was forecast for the region in the early hours of Monday.

Local authorities have issued a flood warning, which could cut off remote communities. Emergency services chief Mick Lowe said there was an increased risk of property flooding and roads being impassable in some places. In the previous 24 hours, the call center had received 330 calls for help, he said.

Tasmania is 445 kilometers from Melbourne. Although it has an area of 68,332 square kilometers, the island is sparsely populated, with 570,000 inhabitants.
