Ukrainian air defense units were activated to repel a new Russian airstrike in Kiev in the early hours of the morning, armed forces officers announced via Telegram.

The armed forces of Russia unleashed dozens of missiles against Kyiv, with Mayor Vitali Klitschko announcing that emergency services have been sent to various districts as there are reports of injuries and damage from the debris of the downed weapons.

The Ukrainian armed forces assured that they shot down some 20 missiles, both cruise and ballistic, that were fired at the capital.

A fire broke out in the Shevchenkivskiy district, where paramedics treated at least one person, Mr Klitschko said via Telegram. In this particular district there are, among other things, university and school buildings.

Emergency services were also rushed to the Sviatosinski, Holosivski and Solomianski districts, he added.

Solomiansky is home to a major railway station and Kyiv’s main airport.

Poland has announced it has rushed fighter jets to guarantee the safety of its airspace amid Russia’s incursion into neighboring Ukraine.

The operations command of the Polish armed forces announced that Polish and allied aircraft had taken off.

“In the southeastern part ofof the country there may be high noise levels due to the start of operations by Polish and allied aircraft,” the administration noted via X.

The southeastern part of Poland borders Ukraine.

Earlier, Reuters reporters in the Ukrainian capital reported hearing loud explosions, which they said appeared to be caused by anti-aircraft strikes, some in the center.

The raid comes exactly one week after Moscow’s forces launched more than 200 missiles and drones against Ukrainian territory. That raid claimed the lives of at least seven people and damaged energy infrastructure across the country. The Ukrainian government called it the “most massive” raid of the war.

The mayor of Kyiv reported that part of a water supply installation was damaged, without specifying whether this would have consequences for the supply to the Ukrainian capital.
