Israeli army operations continue in Jenin
The Israeli army handed over to the Palestinian health services of the occupied West Bank the body of a Palestinian who had been arrested a few hours earlier, while its major operation in the city of Jenin continues for the sixth day.
The Palestinian Red Crescent said it had received the body of 58-year-old Ayman Rajeh Abed, from Kafr Dan village outside Jenin, who was arrested early today. The director of Jenin’s Wisham Bark Hospital said his body bore signs of beatings and torture.
The Israeli military, for its part, claimed that Abed was captured during an anti-terror operation and suffered a “heart attack” upon arrival at a detention center. He was given first aid by army medical personnel and then taken to Jenin hospital. “The IDF is aware of reports that the suspect died while being transported from the Red Crescent,” it said, noting that the incident is under investigation.
Abed’s death comes as Israeli forces have expanded their operations into villages around Jenin, where bulldozers are still digging through roads to find buried bombs.
Israel launched the operation, one of its largest in months, last Wednesday, arguing that Iranian-backed groups were planning to attack civilians. Hundreds of soldiers, with drones and helicopters, are taking part in the operation, which has caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure in Jenin and its densely populated refugee camp. At least 29 Palestinians have been killed and most of them were allegedly members of armed groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Another 121 were injured, according to the Palestinian health services.
Late Sunday night a man was killed west of Jenin. Today, the Red Crescent reported that a man was shot in the chest in Kabatiya, near Jenin, and is in serious condition.
