The representative of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), Omer Celik, hinted that his country has submitted a request to join the BRICS.

Specifically, after the meeting of the Central Executive Committee of the AKP and when asked if Turkey has submitted an application to join the BRICS, Omer Celik replied:

“Anyway, our honorable president has already stated this on various occasions. You know this. That is, our request in this matter is clear. Within this framework this process is ongoing. However, there is no concrete development regarding this. If there is any specific development, i.e. an assessment of BRICS regarding BRICS membership, or any decision of BRICS etc. we will share it with you in this context. But our president has openly stated that Turkey wants to participate in all these important platforms, including BRICS.”

The American network Bloomberg reported, yesterday Monday, that Turkey has submitted an application for membership in BRICS. Sources cited by the American network reportedly said that Turkey made the application due to its frustration over the years-long lack of progress in the European Union (EU) accession process.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government believes the geopolitical center of gravity is shifting away from developed economies, according to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The same sources reportedly said the country’s new diplomatic push reflects its ambitions to cultivate ties with all sides in a multipolar world while fulfilling its obligations as a NATO member. The BRICS candidacy is also partly a result of disagreements with other NATO members, since Turkey maintained close ties with Russia after its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the same sources added.

BRICS is an international political and economic organization of the largest emerging markets. With its current composition, ten countries participate in the organization: Russia, India, China, Brazil, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Kremlin spokesman Yuri Usakov confirmed today that Erdogan will attend the October 22-24 BRICS Summit in Kazan, Tatarstan, Turkish media reported.
