When Vice President Kamala Harris ran for president in 2020, she said plastic straws should be banned. On Thursday, her campaign clarified to Axios that that is no longer her position.

The ban, aimed at protecting the environment and marine life, is the latest progressive issue on which Harris and her campaign are either refusing to comment or changing their position ahead of the Sept. 10 telethon.

Many US regions have banned plastic straws as concerns have grown about plastic pollution in oceans and waterways.

Seattle became the first major US city to ban plastic straws in the summer of 2018. Other countries have also hinted at, or committed to, banning single-use plastic products.

During her remarks on CNN in 2019, Harris was asked if plastic straws should be banned.

“I think I should,” he said. “We need to ban plastic straws,” he added, saying however that “paper straws need to be improved”.

Axios asked Harris’ staff if she still supports that idea.

“He doesn’t support banning plastic straws,” a campaign official replied. “He cast the deciding vote on the most consistent legislation to fight climate change and create clean energy jobs in history, and as president he will focus on extending that progress.”

“He joked even then about how crappy paper straws are and the need to find better environmentally friendly alternatives,” the official clarified.

Former President Trump’s campaign used her past support for the environmental ban to attack her, branding Harris a “San Francisco liberal.”

Trump senior adviser Jason Miller told NBC in July: “I mean, heck, he wants to get rid of plastic straws, what the hell.”
