Russia has declared a ceasefire to evacuate civilians from two cities in eastern Ukraine, including the strategically important port city of Mariupol, following talks between representatives of Kiev and Moscow.

As of 09:00 (Greek time), “the Russian side declares a state of silence (of weapons), while humanitarian corridors will be opened for the evacuation of civilians from Mariupol and Volnovacha”, announced the Ministry of Defense of Russia.

The ministry clarified that the movements from the humanitarian corridors and exit points have been defined in agreement with the Ukrainian authorities.

The civilians will be able to leave Mariupol from 12:00 to 17:00 (Moscow time, 11: 00-16: 00 Ukrainian and Greek time), the city authorities in eastern Ukraine announced, as reported by the RIA agency.

On the night of Friday to Saturday, the mayor of Mariupol, Vadim Boitshenko, had announced that this port city in the Sea of Azov, which normally has 450,000 inhabitants, is “under siege”.

For their part, Ukrainian pro-Russian guerrillas and the Russian army have indicated that the city is under siege.

Prior to the announcement by the Russian Ministry of Defense, Boitshenko had called for a ceasefire “so that we can restore vital infrastructure and organize a humanitarian corridor so that food and medicine can come to the city.”

The town of Volnovacha is located about 60 km north of Mariupol.

In the meantime, another night of agony has passed in Ukraine, with no sign of de-escalation on the horizon. In the meantime, the third round of negotiations is expected to take place over the weekend.

At the same time, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky issued a new message, in which he said that “if we win, it will be the victory of the whole democratic world, a victory of light over darkness, freedom over slavery.”

He stressed, however: “Support Ukraine. If Ukraine falls, the whole of Europe will fall. If we win and I am sure of that, it will indeed be a great victory for the Republic. It will be a victory for freedom. “

Yesterday, Mr. Zelensky condemned NATO’s decision not to close Ukraine’s airspace, saying that his refusal gave the green light to the subsequent bombing of Ukrainian cities and villages. “You exchanged a few tons of fuel for tons of our own blood,” Zelenski said.
